Hiroo Town Guided Tour with a Deer Hunter
In the coastal town of Hiroo in southern Tokachi, there is a female deer hunter named Maya Nakamura. Under the guidance of Maya Nakamura, you will go on a forest walk to learn about deer hunting, make deer antler crafts, try cutting up deer meat, then enjoy the venison together with local seafood in a sumptuous barbecue lunch. It’s an immersive tour that lets you experience the life of a deer hunter and the charm of venison.
After meeting up with Maya Nakamura at the Seaside House in Hiroo Town, you will visit a nearby forest and take a walk inside to learn about how a hunter goes about hunting deer. Maya-san will also show you the traces left behind by deer in the forest.
After the forest walk, you will go back to the Seaside House for another deer-related activity: making a ring from deer antlers. Cut the antler to a suitable thickness then create a hole in the middle with a rotary file.
When the hole is big enough for your finger, you have completed your very own deer antler ring.
The next activity is cutting up large chunks of deer meat to remove the bones. Maya-san will show you how to make the cuts without slicing the meat itself.
Finally, you will enjoy a barbecue lunch using the venison you cut up, as well as some fresh seafood from Hiroo Town. It’s a meal that lets you savor the blessings of the mountains, the farm fields, and the sea.
