Mitsui Farm Vegetable Sorting and Farm Lunch
This tour takes you to Mitsui Farm, a crop farm in Honbetsu Town. Together with the Mitsui family, you will experience sorting and packing vegetables like burdock roots and colorful daikon radishes. You can also enjoy the vegetables in a farm lunch that features tonjiru (pork and vegetable miso soup).
Mitsui Farm has a history that goes back over 100 years. Besides major crops like potatoes and beans, they also cultivate rare vegetables like burdock roots and various colorful varieties of daikon radish. In 2023, to help reduce food waste, they started a food truck business where they offer dishes made with substandard vegetables that are perfectly edible but unsellable due to minor irregularities.
In this tour, you will help the Mitsui family sort and pack their vegetables, including burdock roots and daikon radishes harvested in autumn. It is one of the important tasks they do during the long Hokkaido winter.
During the sorting, you will separate out any vegetables that have some irregularities. You will then use these vegetables to help prepare a delicious farm lunch that includes deep-fried burdock root and tonjiru (pork and vegetable miso soup).
The hot and savory tonjiru and the friendly conversation with the Mitsui family will keep you warm in this rare experience of a farm in winter.
