Shimizu Town Organic Dairy and Crop Farm Tour
This tour takes you to Shimizu Town in western Tokachi to visit two farms that practice organic farming. Miyaji Farm is a free-range dairy farm that focuses on “milk for nature welfare”, while Sawayama Farm is a crop farm that continuously explores new approaches for their organic farming business. It’s an educational tour in the middle of nature that will shed light on the joys and benefits of organic farming.
Your first stop is Miyaji Farm, a dairy farm situated at the foot of the Hidaka mountain range. The farm raises grass-fed cattle that can freely roam the pastures all year round. Take a stroll around the farm’s hilly pastures while listening to the story of farm owner Shinya Miyaji. On clear days, you can even see the Obihiro City skyline from the top of the hill.
At the farm house, you can try a glass of their organic grass-fed milk. Since their cows are raised on pastures all year round, the milk has some slight variations in taste depending on the season. You can also choose to buy their original dairy products like butter and fromage blanc.
Your next stop is Sawayama Farm, an organic crop farm run by the Sawayama family. Learn about their approach to organic and sustainable farming, then experience some of the work they do during the winter, such as sieving the beans and packaging their produce.
After the farm work experience, you can try making onigiri rice balls using organically-grown rice and beans. You can then enjoy it for lunch together with the Sawayama family.
