Lake Nukabira Phantom Bridge and Onsen Tour (Winter)

Experience the Hokkaido winter at Nukabira Gensenkyo, a hot spring district in Kamishihoro Town. First you’ll go on a snowshoe trek in Lake Nukabira to see the famous Taushubetsu River Bridge, a concrete arch bridge that once part of a railway line. You’ll then re-energize yourself with a warm lunch at a local café. Afterwards, you’ll visit Nukabira Onsen Nakamuraya, a lodge in Nukabira Gensenkyo where you can take a relaxing warm bath in the hot springs, enjoy roasted potato chips, or try your hand at making unique handicrafts.
The Taushubetsu River Bridge is a 130-meter long, 10-meter high concrete arch bridge that was part of the old National Railway Shihoro Line. Depending on the season, the bridge becomes visible or completely submerged under the lake, leading it to be called a “phantom bridge”. In winter, you can see the bridge up close by walking across the frozen surface of Lake Nukabira (this activity changes to an observation tour from the lake shore from late February to late March).
After the snowshoe trek to see the bridge, you’ll take a break at local café with a warm, relaxing atmosphere.
At Nukabira Onsen Nakamuraya, you can rejuvenate yourself with a warm bath in the hot springs, or try your hand at making various handicrafts.
Afterwards, you can relax in the lobby while roasting potato chips over a “hibachi” fire bowl. You can also check out their souvenir shop.
